Today, Laos is something of a backwater, a sleepy laid-back place, well behind its neighbours in development terms. It is sparsely populated: only about five million people in a country the size of Britain. Roughly half belong to one of sixty ethnic minorities, or come from other Asian countries. The main religion is Theravada Buddhism, but animism and shamanism is practiced by many ethnic minority groups.

Vientian is only 20km fromthe Thai border, but has a completely different feel to Thailand. It is a lot less developed, and quieter. The population of Laos is only 6,000,000.  Situated on the Mekong river, the city has a large French expat community (It was a french colony until the 70s) as well as many foreign aid workers. It is difficult to believe it is a capital city..you can see goats happily grazing by the side of the road, and cockerels wake you in the morning.
There is a huge monument in the centre that looks like an asian Arc de Triomph, and many beautiful temples. One day, as Leon and I were walking around we saw a tiny kitten in the middle of a fairly busy road, narrowly escaping death by tuk-tuk. Leon picked it up and we carried it in my hat, looking for a safer place for him, like a park. Luckily, in this part of the world you are never far from a Buddhist monk. We found some playing tennis in the grounds of a temple, and they agreed to look after the kitten.

After years of war and isolation, Southeast Asia’s most pristine environment, intact cultures and quite possibly the most chilled-out people on earth mean destination Laos is fast earning cult status among travellers. It is developing quickly but still has much of the tradition that has sadly disappeared elsewhere in the region. Village life is refreshingly simple and even in Vientiane it’s hard to believe this sort of languid riverfront life exists in a national capital. Then, of course, there is the historic royal city of Luang Prabang, where watching as hundreds of saffron-robed monks move silently among centuries-old monasteries is as romantic a scene as you’ll experience anywhere in Asia.

stop over at Ban Houeilampen to visit the Hmong hilltribe people. They are very poor, but have a vibrant culture and an interesting history, overnight in Pakbeng.

at Sala Hin Boun we continue by boat upriver to Kong Lor village, where you have the chance to explore, before boarding a smaller boat into the famous Kong Lor Cave. We navigate through the cave, which is over 7km long and includes a spectacular cavern over 100m high,

explore Vientiane capital by visiting the major sights of the capital; including the oldest Wat Sisaket with thousands of miniature Buddha statues and the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo, which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image.

we cross the Mekong River by boat, to the picturesque village of Ban Chan, a pottery village. We then visit the morning Phousi Market, where you will see such diverse offerings as dried buffalo skin, local tea and saltpeter among the chickens,
